A slow, beautiful, dreamlike book. A simple but meaningful story wrapped in glittering prose, with generous lashings of rich descriptions, vibrant characters, and ethereal style.

One to savour.

A rare DNF (did not finish) for me. Although the story was intriguing I struggled with the language - too many similies and a lot of very lyrical description which I found took me out of the story.

I think this is one of those books you either love the way it is written or don't, and unfortunately in this particular case I was in the latter camp.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what Cartwright does in the future though, as I appreciate a debut novel isn't a full taste of someone's abilities!

This is a sweet story with a highly endearing protagonist and some pretty prose, but that's kind of all it did for me. I liked it but didn't love it and I don't think much of it will stick with me for long.

Feathertide, a debut novel from Beth Cartwright is one of those books that pulls you in by the cover and the intriguing plot. Born covered in feathers, Marea is kept hidden away in the basement of a brothel and kept secret from the world. Curious to find out more about her past, she goes in search of her father who remains a mystery. This is a fantastical fairy tale with mermaids, and mysterious mystic weather and fortune tellers. This is a coming of age story Beth explores sexuality, family secrets and lies, self acceptance with great details into the characters and the world. Beth also appeared on my blog, talking about her ideal bookshop. You can read the Q&A over on my blog (link is on my profile). Thanks to this book I'm about to start reading a 1000 page fantasy novel as I've finally gotten over my resistance to fantasy!

Thank you to Netgalley for supplying me this title..

Thanks to Netgalley and PRH/Ebury for the free review copy.

I really enjoyed this book! Way more than I thought I was going to. It gave me serious 'Museum of Extraordinary Things' vibes, but more fantastical and slightly less dark. The premise is super interesting and original, I love the idea of this concentrated intrigue and mystery surrounding one girl who was born with feathers. You very easily fall into her story, confined to her small world much like she is. When she finally steps out and begins to discover who she is, we do the same. We get to witness the wonders of the world through her eyes, which makes it very easy to connect and relate to her.

As well as a story of self-discovery, this is also a story of love and heartbreak. It explores relationships, new and old, in such a delicate way. The story itself just feels so tiny and delicate, yet so important. I believe I'll remember it for a while.

4 stars.

SYNOPSIS:
Marea doesn't know much about her special quality and has no idea who her father is. She goes on a mission to find her dad and ends up finding so much more. This is a story of love and finding yourself.

REVIEW:
What a lovely story. I really loved the explanations used and the way the author describes the surroundings. Marea is a great character, she is strong and won't get deterred from her goals no matter what happens. It was a story about finding out who you are and where you can go. It touched so nicely on love and understanding of what you need and don't need in order to be happy. I enjoyed it very much.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with the ARC.

The plot started off very well. I liked the writing and the way the story was narrated. As the story progressed it was hard for me to keep attention to all that was happening because the characters or the plot did not sit well in my mind. I wanted more of character and world building and lack of that disappointed me. I struggled to finish the book and having read so many fantasy novels and series, this was just not for me. I am writing this review in a hurry because I am not sure if I'll remember half of it tomorrow.
