'Superman: Action Comics, Volume 1: Path of Doom' by Dan Jurgens brings an old enemy back, and a new Superman or two.

Doomsday is back. Clark Kent is not Superman. Lex Luthor IS Superman. There is also a new Superman to this world who is married to his world's Lois Lane and has a super powered son named Jonathan. Confused? It's all part of the fun of this issue, but the fun is short-lived as Superman has to figure out how to take out Doomsday. Lois has to comfort Jonathan that his dad can do this since he did last time (sparing him the cost it took last time). Wonder Woman even has a part to play.

This collects Action Comics 957-962. The art team changes, so the style does a little as well, but it's still pretty good. This includes a cover gallery and those covers are also pretty good. My favorite is the cover of 962 by Clay Mann which shows Superman punching Doomsday into the Action Comics logo.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Action Comics really hitting the ground running with Doomsday of all villains. Mr. Oz lurking in the background, SuperLex and Wonder Woman make for an interesting story. Who's this guy claiming to be Clark Kent?

Following the Convergence arc, we have a new Superman with his family on an Earth that is unfamiliar to them. This is part of the DC Rebirth event, resetting the universe after the New 52 mess. This was really exciting for me, not only because Clark, Lois, and Jon are some of my favorite characters, but because the Big Bad in this arc is Doomsday. You get some quality emotional moments revolving around what has happened between Clark and Doomsday on his Earth (this Earth’s former Superman never fought Doomsday). This volume goes a long way toward repairing a lot of the relationships that were damaged by the New 52 run and restoring the storyling to the pre-Flashpoint continuity. I absolutely loved this and I can’t wait to get my hands on volume two.

I loved the writing. Dan Jurgens has been a top-notch Superman writer for decades now, and he draws on iconic storylines for his plot here. Most of the art is mediocre, and Tyler Kirkham's pencils on a couple of these issues are utterly hideous. I don't really understand why DC insists on publishing weekly titles when this is the best product they can produce, art wise. Still, I liked it more on this re-read.

Loved the art, enjoyed the fight, curious who the big bad is and what Luther's game is... If it's a game... I love anything with Clark and his family though ❤️

Superman vs Doomsday.
Again.

But done pretty well! The story felt a bit stretched out but the art was consistently good across, and especially in the fight scenes. A lot of comics make it difficult to follow what’s happening w overly “actioned” fight sequences. These had good movement and spectacle, while not being hard to figure who’s doing what.
Sets up a big bad very well, I’m curious to see where this goes.

The most directly tied to 'Rebirth' while directly tying back to the era that I began reading comics: The Death of Superman. It's a return to form and character that I've been missing. Where storytelling may be lacking at times - you can only see Superman punch Doomsday so many times - it's completely made up for in nostalgia.

I don't know what to rate this, so don't be surprised if I change the rating.

I didn't hate it but, I sure as hell didn't like it either.

The plot was okay, a tad annoying, but not bad. I have to say, though son of superman wasn't my cup of tea it was heaps better than this one. I might have change my rating for son of superman, because I appreciate it more now.

The plot was pretty bland though there are a few things that stand out. The artwork wasn't my favorite but I felt it worked well with story, though Wonder Woman's design irked me a bit. Lois didn't impress me in this one though, in son of superman she was pretty badass

I have a few questions:

SuperLex?

Weird dude in green hood, whatcha doing? Also, who are you?

Human Clark Kent, dafuq?

Why the hell does rebirth have so many duplicate characters now?

Two Lois lanes, possibly three idk.
Two Wally Wests,
Two Clark Kents...
I'm starting to get overwhelmed and confused.

Overall, I'm not impressed.
