Perhaps I will up this review once I’ve taken more time to think about things. However, as of now-the story was par while the art was awesome.

I found the story a bit hard to follow - too much back story for such a short volume. The time jumps and the background was difficult to keep up with and then the action happened so fast.

The character development felt patchy and there wasn’t proper resolution or explanation before things just moved on. I hated the male protagonist and felt nothing for the queen.

The sexism was a lot too. Every background character that was femme presenting was hyper sexualised.

Even if this one wasn't for me I do see its potential for some reader. The artwork is a mixed of classical style and some more original stuff. The story itself is a mixed of humor and action, which is rarely my thing, with a bunch of clichés. If you don,t mind those, or like this style then go for it. But for me it wasn't a good read!

Syfy is apparently making a show of this, so checked it out on comixology.

Art reminded me of old Matt Wagner at some points, which can be fun,
but the plot wasn't really interesting... UNTIL issue 4, which fills in
the backstory and paints both the good gal and bad guys more in
shades of grey than black and white. But after that, the ending
was somewhat hand-waved... BeforeILeaveYouToDieMrBond,
ProtagonistFisticuffsPrevailAgainstAnyOdds, etc.

I was somewhat surprised to see the "Queer" label on the tv show,
as the original material is not. I guess they added a new
character not in the graphic novel. Diversity is better than not,
but I'd much rather see it as an integral part of an original
thought-out story, rather than a character intended to represent
a demographic shoe-horned in by/for marketing. It's somewhat
ironic that the trailer features the lead character touting
how they "hate labels" (when asked to "identify themselves",
ok it's funny) --while the creators just slap them on.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from Edelweiss. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I love that Vagrant Queen has amazing space opera vibes with a POC MC, fight scenes, and plenty of action packed graphics. Vagrant Queen is a fun SF comic featuring aliens, spaceships, and drama. She's incredibly fierce and self assured, while also being totally capable of defending herself. It is wonderfully fast paced and I devoured this volume in a day because the story is captivating. I love this space royalty on the run vibe. There's something satisfying about escaping into space. And the graphics are so colorful! It's a graphic style that's a bit different from what I normally read, but it is colorful and well drawn!

I really liked this graphic novel. I thought the story was interesting and kept me entertained throughout the whole story. Elida is a total badass and I absolutely love her! Also, although Isaac turned out to be (sort of) against Elida I still found there banter back and forth really funny.

I think Jason Smith's illustrations are awesome and Harry Saxon's coloring is phenomenal. The illustrations and coloring went really well with the space theme of the story.

Thank you NetGalley and Vault Comics for the advanced reading copy of this graphic novel.
