After how good the astonishing colour of after was I found this to be such a letdown. The story just didn’t grab me the same way. But it could be because I’m getting over YA

A tale of two star-crossed young lovers that ends with an unexpected twist in this magical realism novel that blends Romeo and Juliet with Chinese mythology. I really enjoyed the Chinese mythology aspect but ultimately this book fell flat for me. The main characters chemistry felt forced. It got a bit messy with all the points of view and the alternating third-person narration. I am also not sure how I feel about the ending.

A lovely mix of fairy tale and contemporary love story, reminding me of Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus in tone. Loved the fully developed characters and the shifting points of view. A little too much of a fairy tale ending for me though.

So I did enjoy this but I didn't love it. Lots of cool interesting things, some fun connections and overall a good time. I just wasn't as engaged with the romance or the characters as I would like. Part of that might be because of the YA aspect so take that with a grain of salt (since I am an adult and the book technically isn't targeted to me).

I just did not find it to be very captivating. It felt like there was just a lot of building up to the climax, which ended up not being that great. It felt rushed, it wasn’t exciting, and it was overall underwhelming. The story set up a lot of different conflicts and side plots, but none of them really amounted to anything or even mattered by the end of the book. The overall premise was brilliant, though. I just wish it’d been executed better. That being said, all of the characters were very realistic and well-developed. It was not a tedious read, either.
This book has very Romeo & Juliet undertones in terms of the romance, but the plot was more what you would find in a Rick Riordan Presents book.
