Flat out, this is an entertaining book. Written like a fiction, the author tells his real life story of hiking (most of) the AT with an old buddy.  There is lots of wit and humor with a lot of interesting facts about the AT and the wildlife that (used to) comprise it.  Informative and funny. I will likely read this again in a few years.

I will never forgive this book for personally injuring ME. I had to read this in HS and a teacher betrayed me, giving this to me as a recommendation. Oh how she WOUNDED ME. Surely the true reason this book exists is to punish me for the authors decision to go on a long ass hike with nothing really going on.

But what busted my bubble? What peed in my cherrios? The a constant mention of the *threat* of bears. Hyped and hyped through the whole thing. We hear about bears, we lean their greatest's strengths and how to survive a bear encounter. The gear it takes, bear mace and hiding your food up a tree. THERES A BEAR ON THE COVER. All to come to what? A. Single. Bear. MAYBE. Maybe they might've heard one-ONE NIGHT. THE DISSAPOINTMENT. Now did I wish the author to run into a bear at the risk of being hurt? Of course not. But how can you hype bears and the walk this much only for us to get to the end, and the conclusion is? WHAT?!
Am I missing the point of this book? Possibly. As I said however, this is a personal woundage of my teenage soul, which I reflect with a neutral rating.

in conclusion, OUCH MY TIME AND ENERGY IS GONE. IDK why I am still so mad years later. Maybe bc I had to thoroughly annotate and write and discuss this book at too great a length for what it deserves, but the trauma still wells inside of me...

I really enjoyed Bryson's writing and will read more of his books. I liked the parts where he actually talked about hiking, especially when he was with Katz, better than the history/science parts.
