Favorite Quotes:
“I wanted to quit and to do this forever, sleep in a bed and in a tent, see what was over the next hill and never see a hill again. All of this all at once, every moment, on the trail or off.”

“To tell you the truth, I'm amazed we've come this far," he said, and I agreed. We had hiked 500 miles, a million and a quarter steps, since setting off from Amicalola. We had grounds to be proud. We were real hikers now. We had shit in the woods and slept with bears. We had become, we would forever be, mountain men.”

“The hardest part was coming to terms with the constant dispiriting discovery that there is always more hill.”

Oh to walk. It just becomes what you do. This book helped put in perspective just how ginormous the Appalachian trail is and had lots of good information in it and I also burst out laughing several times. Feeling like I need to get myself out in the woods

This was an incredibly enjoyable read. I expected to hear stories of the trail, not to also learn so much history of the trail. Both were thoroughly enjoyable.

A Walk in the Woods is an interesting and occasionally humorous memoir describing the author's experiences on the Appalachian Trail. Bryson can be seen using his signature wit, but it does not hit here as much as it has in his other works (in my mind).

There were also some instances of needlessly judgmental and somewhat rude commentary of some of the individuals he encountered along the way. This took me out if the experience somewhat.

I had a boss who wanted to hike the Appalachians with his daughter. He should read this book first! Funny, inspiring, and timely (re: the bear or a man question floating around on social media these days).
