It was okay. My biggest turnoff was how arrogant the author is at various points. I've outgrown thinking rants where you make fun of other people are funny. Like, cool. You think Europe is better than America. And you think you're better than Americans because you've lived in Europe.
Some criticism is warranted: park services need to be better, preservation should be better, cities should be walkable. That's all valid and dealt with well enough. What isn't necessary is whining about fat people and how ugly things are and how stupid you think Americans are. It's pathetic.
Also, p sure he complained for the entire book about one thing or another. Exhausting. Not funny.
Still, it was informative when he wasn't being a jerk about things.

not my favorite bryson. obviously it’s 1998 but the fatphobia is just hard to read when the book is about two guys WALKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL like ….. cmon. but man, it made me want to hike. and i’ve hiked in maine! actually terrifying spectacle!!! but beautiful and fulfilling

This book has not aged well. Most people think of Bill Bryson as an affable nature lover. Reading this book in 2023, he comes across as an unnecessarily mean, misogynist (naming a server Betty Slutz), fat-phobic, jerk. Additionally, while he clearly cares about nature, it was not made evident if his commentary was based on science.

Nana and Papa recommended this. This book amused me. It could have done without details of Katz and his (and the author’s) many sexist comments. Still, I enjoyed it enough.

I loved this book about 15 years ago. I don’t now. It’s absolutely ridiculous how often the author leans on lazy descriptions of people's “flawed” appearance for comedy. Dude, that’s not funny. He just seems like a pretentious privileged male.
