I don‘t care what y‘all say this book was phenomenal! I stayed up until 3AM to finish reading this.
I love the depth of every character, the different POV‘s, the romance (that made my heart SCREAM), the politics, the twists.
I rarely get this giddy about a YA fantasy but I LOVE THIS SERIES.

5 stars!
This is quite possibly the best book I've read so far in 2022, and it hasn't even been published yet.
Brigid Kemmerer has done it again. She's created an incredible fantasy novel filled with angsty romance, unthinkable twists, and edge-of-your-seat political intrigue.
I always find that second books in series are hard to pull off and they always tend to fall a little bit short of expectations, but Defend the Dawn doesn't fall into that category. It raised the stakes so much higher and made me love the characters even more.
Every single page of this book was incredible, and I couldn't put it down.
I won't go into too much detail regarding the synopsis so as not to completely spoil Defy the Night, but know that you can expect new complex characters, a deeper understanding of existing characters, and lots go angsty, devastating moments.
Brigid Kemmerer can keep breaking my heart and I will keep loving it.
Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

2024 reread to prep for book 3 - love this book and these characters. Audio is so good!
Even better than the first one. I love the complexity of the character relationships and the dialogue about morality and ethics, and the plot just keeps on thickening! I’m counting the minutes until the next book is out!!!
This was one of my most anticipated fall releases, unfortunately it missed the mark for me. I can normally overlook the naivety of YA female main characters, because obviously they’re YA and usually teenagers. Tessa annoyed me so much in this book though. I could not handle her until the last few chapters. I’m hopeful she’ll undergo a transformation in book 3, but at the same time book 3 is a long time to wait for the main character to finally grow.
The plot of this fell flat for me. Nothing really happened until the last 80ish pages of this book and then everything was happening too fast. The pacing was off and I found myself getting bored throughout the first half. The extra point of view we got in this was nice though, I did really enjoy that.
I wasn’t too happy with how things ended. I’m not mad at the cliff hanger, it just feels like things went in an unnecessary direction. I would absolutely love to eat my words with book 3 though. I’m hopeful the third book will rope me back in and make me fall in love with these characters again.
