This was one of my most anticipated fall releases, unfortunately it missed the mark for me. I can normally overlook the naivety of YA female main characters, because obviously they’re YA and usually teenagers. Tessa annoyed me so much in this book though. I could not handle her until the last few chapters. I’m hopeful she’ll undergo a transformation in book 3, but at the same time book 3 is a long time to wait for the main character to finally grow.
The plot of this fell flat for me. Nothing really happened until the last 80ish pages of this book and then everything was happening too fast. The pacing was off and I found myself getting bored throughout the first half. The extra point of view we got in this was nice though, I did really enjoy that.
I wasn’t too happy with how things ended. I’m not mad at the cliff hanger, it just feels like things went in an unnecessary direction. I would absolutely love to eat my words with book 3 though. I’m hopeful the third book will rope me back in and make me fall in love with these characters again.

Reread update 1/24: reread for the new release and in can’t wait to start the next
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Oh. My. GOSH. I have to wait another YEAR for the next book?!!
Did I binge this 432 page book in a day? Yes. Yes I did. I also stayed up till 11:30pm reading it. WORTH IT.
Man oh man. I love this book. THE CHARACTERS. THE PLOT. THE BANTER. THE TENSION.
This was an amazing sequel. I love that it didn’t brush off all of the problems from the first book ending, it felt real. I could squeal all day about this book- but I just love this series and CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE.

ARC review of Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer. Thank you to NetGalley!
This is the second book which picks up right where it left off at the end of Defy the Night.
Defend the Dawn, unlike Defy the Night, was extremely fast paced and starts with a mysterious spy coming to Kandalas shores.
The story follows Tessa and Corrick who span the world via ship to try and obtain a trade agreement for more Moonflower to help with the fever.
We get to meet a rowdy crew of sailors who are their own found family and getting a glimpse into their lives and separate stories was great to help build the world and history.
We have also gained an extra POV from ‘The Outlaw’ who, let me tell you, is not who you think it is! That’s all I’ll say in that.
Tessa continues to be this strong, smart apothecary we love and Corrick is someone I love to hate and hate to love. The tension between Corrick, Rian and Tessa felt really authentic. There was many scenes I was gasping and laughing in the same breath.
This book is jam packed with surprises and twists. I honestly didn’t know how this was going to end however we’ve got a nice little cliff hanger which had me wanting to throw my iPad!
All in all we had betrayal, pirates, battles, politics, one bed and a love triangle. Great world building and an extensive knowledge of a ship (I had to Google what a bilge pump was!)

”When I pick a fight, you’ll know it.”
Ahh! I was so excited for this book to come out! I read Defy the Night last year, by just randomly downloading a book to my brand new (at the time) ereader, only to fall in love with it and find out it had just come out and i’d have to wait forever for a sequel, but forever has finally come!
I was wondering if the romance would still be interesting, because sometimes when a relationship is already established in the first book, it gets really boring and repetitive. Thankfully it kept me super interested still, and there was plenty of angst, which I love!
I loved that the book was mostly set on a ship, I love a bit of a deep sea/pirate vibe and it was really giving that. The plot twists/reveals for the most part took me by surprise, but made a lot of sense. However, they also kept me needing more information, and not all of my questions were answered. This book definitely felt like mostly set up to the next book, considering not a lot was resolved.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book as a sequel, and I’m excited for where this series goes from here!
