For a quick review, you might just want to scroll to the pros and cons list!
What a solid book to start off 2023 with! What's funny is that I had initially thought that 'Defy the Night' was a standalone, and then I heard it was a duology. After finishing this book, it is obvious it's actually a trilogy... but as I said in my review of 'Defy the Nigh', I am definitely not disappointed!
Brigid Kemmerer is such a talented author. She writes suck fast-paced books, that warp up a good romance with a compelling plot.
This book follows Tessa and Corrick after the aftermath of the first novel and focuses on them journeying to another country to try to negotiate for more medicine for Kandala. Although I a not a fan of the 'book-two-journey-trope', I absolutely loved this story and found the plot line and cliffhangers so addicting! This book definitely does not suffer from the 'middle book syndrome', which is unfortunately common in many YA series, so you do not need to worry about feeling bored!
I did feel as though there was a tone different from the first novel, however, I do think that it is fitting of the higher-stakes continual of the story. I love newly introduced characters and I cannot wait to get my hands on the for the next installment!
Pros:
- Strong characters
- Sort of a Robin Hood fairytale retelling
- A great book to read during the pandemic
- Amazing world building
- Brigid Kemmerer is an amazing writer
- Friends-to-enemies-to-lovers, slowburn
Cons:
- Plot twists are predictable
- Fairly trope-y
- A bit slow at the start of the book
- Not much of a 'fantasy'
- Sometimes the characters did really uncharacteristic things that were really frustrating
To wrap it up, I think that this book was a great book two and I am so happy I got through it so quickly and that I enjoyed it as much as I did! I definitely questioned Kemmerer's writing after the end of the 'A Curse so Dark and Lonely' series (if you know, you know), but I have so much hope in this series; I cannot wait to see what comes next in Tessa and Corricks' story!
