Only pick up this book if you have the last one handy! This ends in a cliffhanger. While the pacing is slow in some parts, most of the novel moves fast, and since almost every chapter ends in a cliffhanger, this was another quick read. I was annoyed with Tessa in this one because she was so indecisive about things, but I suppose the author has to have that in the second book. Another fun read, though.

Defend the Dawn was an okay read, definitely no where near as good as Defy the Night. What really had my intrigue in the first book, all the politics, rebellion, betrayals and possible wars, was mostly missing or only pointed at from a distance. The story revolved around a sea voyage that not only limited our fantastic world building from the first book but also a lot of character development. Throwing in a weird love triangle or relationship drama (or whatever it was) was completely unnecessary and actually made me incredibly annoyed with the FMC. Her strength, bravery and resilience seemed whittled down to a pining school girl. Aside from causing absolute chaos in the final act, for absolutely everyone involved, Tessa really didn’t stand out at all throughout the story. There were a lot of slow moments and I found myself wanting to skim read.
I really enjoyed the Outlaw chapters because I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see that type of development for that character. And while the identity of the Outlaw was revealed quite quickly I am kind of glad that wasn’t dragged out long.
Here’s hoping the third book in the series is able to redeem itself.
