I think this book is a solid follow up that builds so well on the first book, and honestly, the expanded world building is what kept me super hooked. We’re finally stepping outside of just the palace and Kandala, which makes me really excited for the finale.
Now, I have to say I was a little annoyed with the dynamic between Corrick and Tessa in this one. The tension and miscommunication dragged on a bit too long for me. Like, I get it, they’ve got issues, but wow it felt like they kept circling the same argument. Though, I did appreciate that things finally started to smooth out toward the end...
The ending definitely left me intrigued. There’s so much to unpack there, and I love that it sets things up without feeling like a total cliffhanger, similar to the first book. And don’t even get me started on Rain! I did not see that reveal coming. One of the stronger twists in the series so far.
And of course, Harriston. My favorite. I love every single time he’s on the page, and I need more of him in the next book, period.

The world building and character development in this series is definitely done so well. This one did feel a bit slower pace than Defy the Night, though I’m not sure if it’s because I read it via Audiobook this time. I also found myself wishing the narrators for Corrick and Harristan were switched.

Probably would have been way too bored by the politics if I hadn’t listened to this as an audiobook. Plus, Corrick was a jerk the whole time and felt very different from the first book. They were on the ship for the whole book.

I forgot how much i liked this series!
I love all the characters and i'm really glad we got a little more from some of the side characters in this.
This book took a turn i didn't expect but i enjoyed non the less and I'm starting to realise i really like pirate/sea journey books!
The angst in this book is done very well and the ending makes me so excited for the 3rd book!
