What I liked:
-we truly never know the full mystery of the main character and I felt like as much as I was dying to know, I also enjoyed that.
What I didn't like:
-the writing style. It felt like the author was trying SO hard to have beautiful and poetic writing to the point where it was cringy - "Disappointment cracked like an egg in me" was one of my favourites. There were so many that it because distracting.
-our nameless main character was so stupid. How could you POSSIBLY take this position and not think there is something sinister going on? You're an idiot, I'm sorry. Every time something "bad" happened I was like, ah yes of course whereas the main character was like ???? how????
-the ending. Felt so lazy. Like, "I don't know how to write thing buuuuut yolo".
-bad mental health rep (talking about people being/acting "crazy" therefore no one will believe them, disregarding mental health)
-this is marketed as a thriller but it is not.
-TW: lots of domestic abuse in here - neglect, physical hitting, starving main character, gas lighting, etc.

This book had so much potential. The premise is original and could have gone in so many directions. The story dragged on with nothing happening for far too long and the ending was so frustrating!

I got frustrated with this book because the idea is interesting but the execution is really boring and slow. I listened to it on audiobook at 1.5x and I know I wouldn't have finished it if I would've read it. The characters are unlikable and neither main character has any meaningful backstory. The part I did like is the victim-turned-villain character arc of our nameless protagonist but it wasn't as satisfying as it could have been. She had her power taken from her and so she takes control. Max is a limp character because he has no backstory and he's just a pathetic disgusting controlling weirdo. Overall I'm glad I finished it because I really wanted to know what happened to the real Rosanna. She killed herself. Pretty disappointing. I thought Max killed her. He's not a murderous freak, he's just a freak. In it's defense, the ending is still chilling and disturbing. Unfortunately the build up was not worth it for the ending for me. It was severely lacking in momentum.

Beyda's The Body Double is a twisted look into how far a man will go to be with the one he loves, including remaking her in someone who looks like her.
The nameless protagonist is selected to be Rosanna Feld's body double, to literally become her. Her time is spent learning to be her, trapped in an apartment with only Max as company.
This is a wonderful depiction of Stockholm Syndrome and losing oneself to become someone else.
*I received an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review

I thought that the premise was really interesting but the pacing was agonizingly slow. I fought through for thr pay off but it left me very unsatisfied.
This book was weird. Not much made sense. I thought it would take some kind of turn and there'd be an exciting twist but there wasn't so the whole tone of the book was just flat. The ending was so freaking unsatisfying.
**Spoilers ahead**
The quick change from the MC being her own person to accepting an entirely new and very restrictive way of life was baffling. There were a few mentions of her not liking being like a prisoner but she embraced it for the most part.
Then later Max wouldn't let her even continue having pain pills after surgery but all of a sudden she has sleeping pills with no explanation for why or insight into why he was okay with letting her have them.
It was pretty clear to me from the beginning that Rosanna was actually dead. I thought maybe Max killed her which would have made sense. But then we find out she killed herself and that didn't even line up with the way people said Rosanna was. Leo was the only one to notice the birthmark and was obviously really close to her and he said Rosanna would never commit suicide, then it ends up that's what she did? It just felt off.
Then the ending. What the hell? A lot of the writing felt like the author was trying to be poetic but it didn't fit. The ending turned the book from bad to worse, for me.
