Magari sono di parte perché Let Maps to Others parla di tutto ciò che amo in una storia: dilemmi morali, avventura e meraviglia, però sta di fatto che a me questa novella è decisamente piaciuta. Molto, molto decisamente.
Abbiamo un protagonista splendidamente caratterizzato, alla solita maniera della Parker, che è anche un narratore ironico e che è un piacere stare ad ascoltare. Una riflessione sul prezzo da pagare per aver fatto la cosa sbagliata pur sapendo di essere nel giusto e anche un discorso più generale sulla verità e sulla memoria.
Let Maps to Others concentra nella sua brevità un’eccellente storia che, pur non essendo permeata dell’elemento fantastico – anche questo, un universo secondario senza magia o altri elementi tipici del fantasy, è un tratto tipico delle storie della Parker, specie di quelle dell’ultimo periodo – riesce lo stesso a essere un’opera di grande intrattenimento di cui sono entusiasta e di cui consiglio caldamente la lettura.
Volevo dare cinque stelline già ad A Small Price to Pay for Birdsong, ma mi sono trattenuto per via della brevità e della mancanza di azione in favore dell’introspezione. Qui, non vedo ragione di trattenermi.

I've been a fan of K.J Parker for a while now, her/his unique take on fantasy is one of the best I've ever read. (We don't know who K. J Parker is, neither her gender, nor her nationality, but for some reason, many people think she is a woman).
This small novella deals with the writing of history and the economics of sea-trade in Parker's indubitable style. I've also come to love Parker's unique (and usually irascible) lead protagonists. I wish we had more like them.

Let Maps to Others has two scholars, locked in a battle to be the foremost expert on an imaginary utopia. When one thinks he destroys the other's chances of finally besting him in proving the utopia is real, the other resorts to trickery to get the glory for being right - only to have their obsessed ruler task him with accompanying him on a fool's journey. It's just beautifully written and tense as lie builds on lie builds on lie and you can't see if anyone could possibly gain as a result.
