While I enjoy Agatha Christie and usually find her mysteries sharp and well-developed, I am unable to say that for this one. The mystery kicks off rather clumsily in my opinion. Tuppence proceeds to track down the origin of a painting but I never understood her real motivation. It seemed a flimsy reason to suspect it had anything to do with the no-longer-in-the-nursing-home woman.
From there, it seemed to awkwardly stack into some sort of mystery, although I struggled to follow it at times. By the end, there actually was some mystery and some conclusion (conveniently given to the reader by the criminal rather than the detective) but there were loose ends none the less.
Overall, this was a poor, ill constructed mystery. I cannot recommend it.

I didn’t find this mystery as compelling, because the basis for its investigation never seemed very plausible and it was slower and focused extensively on aging. I disliked that Tommy and Tuppence were split up for almost the entire book, since they work best together. I was also very frustrated that Christie seems to have forgotten about the daughter they adopted in the last book.

I love Tommy and Tuppence, but this one is a bit of a mess. Lots of talking to finally get you to the end, where all the messy pieces come together. It does come together, and makes some sense - but one isn't totally sure the chronology really works. Tuppence is the one in danger in this one, once with a cosh in the head that lands her in the hospital, and in the final confrontation with a killer. But in between the action is a lot of talking and wandering around. It's a meandering story.
