I want every book Nicola Dinan ever writes because she is absolutely the author for me. I'm 2 for 2 on excellent reads from her, and I am just once again in awe of how she creates a character. Their feelings, their depth, their flaws, their RELATIONSHIPS in every single form. It is all done so flawlessly, so realistically and in such a heartfelt way that I both ended up laughing my ass off at this book and tearing up in public spaces over it. There is such a good balance of flaws with the main characters, and I just love how there is no villain, no clear wrong or right at times, there is just mess and people trying and people struggling at love and friendship and life and ugh. So good, cannot wait for every new book this woman writes because she is officially my go-to for literary fiction that feels like sitting down and overhearing strangers gossip so intensely that you hallucinate your attachment to the people in their lives.

no cause this writing was insufferable i'm so sorry it was so flowery that it continuously actually lost the plot. example with even the first chapter, we see the character find fingers i. the bath drain. cool as fuck on a sentence level sure. does that actually make any sense seeing as the family EATS and never wastes the fingers (their favorite parts allegedly) and doesn’t kill the bodies in the bath at all? nope. this happened so much where scenes would happen and i’d be like sentence wise? wow pretty writing. scene wise? what the fuck is going on i never understand who is saying or doing what (perfect example the bullying scenes like it’s so flowery that i cannot tell what is literally happening ever). also just so very repetitive. would have also preferred it either lean into realistic scenarios or totally away because the middle ground of having phones and cars and a road RIGHT BY THE HOUSE makes the extension of belief so hard. especially when you take into mind the fact that people CANNOT eat exclusively human flesh without getting a disease (which would have been such an interesting story in its own right). also the timeline of everything? so messy. could not tell what was a memory and what was happening and it didn’t feel intentional it felt sloppy. overall i needed to DNF because i was so ready to extend my disbelief and just have a fun weird horror time but the flaws of the writing made it so i couldn’t help but feel annoyed at nearly everything.
besides the pretty writing there was nothing here for me. the character decisions were annoying, Bel was so whiny, the villain ridiculous, and the prose so flowery at points i couldn’t tell if anything of substance was actually being said.

never been so confused by an ending in my life (had to look it up for explanation) but besides some of the confusing dialogue (could be a translation issue) i was really enjoying this one. very messy, flawed main character that i loved to be in the head of. the sudden shift of pace in the final like ten pages however was so jarring and i had no idea what was going on, which was too bad.

cute but probably won't read the next volume
gave this 3 stars at first but the next day alone i forgot nearly all of the stories that were in it, they really just did not do anything for me at all
