no rating but this was really well done. loved the annotations and overall format, do wish the designers had awareness of margins and binding more so that there wouldn't be so many full-page images that were cut off in the middle. overall though a very well formatted and intentionally designed screenplay (the script itself was excellent ofc). opening essay didn't bring forth too many new ideas to my attention but i'm sure for others it has and will. a good introduction to Black horror and overall a very beautiful book physically to have in one's collection if you already loved the film.

oh i really was not liking this. the fandom nature that was so parasocial and possessive was something that just creeped me out too much. i didn’t want to wait for it to be dissected or challenged. also did not care for the characters, the dialogue, or anything else unfortunately. just a very uncomfy read so i had to stop. the way my stomach churned at “our boys” being said constantly and also the real people shipping obsession just yeah no. not for me.

i am just bored at this point. i feel like if i cared more about these characters i would be down but they’re very forgettable to me. i feel this would be much better as a shorter work like a novella or short story where vibes being all there is could be more palatable
fast-paced

loved emezi's writing as usual, and the magic system and setting here was wonderful. however, this ended up being a letdown for me, as the main character did not go through much development at all and remained very frustrating to read about as compared to the flawed but still riveting characters i've read from emezi before so consistently. the ending was also incredibly fast, and wrapped up way too easily and perfectly and did not feel earned in any way. the whole novel went by so quickly that i found myself detached from the plot, but mostly detached and frustrated by the main character and how we were always being TOLD what her connection to her twin was rather than really getting to SEE it and feel like we CARED. also the random bursts of jealousy and impatience from somadina was endlessly irritating because once again, we never saw that explored or challenged or redeemed. by the end her flaws just felt so surface-level and it made it harder to sympathize with her actions.
