this book explains how such a promising ideology slowly went down the drain. a lot of filipinos voted for the president sharing a belief that the country would have had lower crime rates if the "criminals" ceased to exist. this happened in 2016. it felt so long when you think of eight long years. however, reading through this book made me relive the terrors of the time. as a filipino, i was in indescribable pain reading the story of how my fellow countrymen were tortured and brutally murdered. the cops had gained so much power to the point where they shot those innocent lives to death regardless of age. upon reading the book, i'd say chapter 12 was something i could vividly recall and will never forget. it was nearing dawn when it happened. i casually opened my twitter where a viral video of a policeman shooting an elderly woman and her son was circulating all over the internet. i don't normally watch videos like this, as i find it heavily distressing. even so, i still did it. it was horrible. that chapter was totally unexpected, but it had such an impact on me as if reliving the horrors of the past.

i highly recommend this to everyone, but keep in mind that there are quite a lot of trigger warnings. the author explained it well not leaving out the important details. this book is not only for filipinos to read, i believe that a lot more people across the world can and should too. she also provided chapters solely for the historical context of the book.

mad respect to the author!
