emotional hopeful lighthearted fast-paced

This is such a warm and fuzzy romance. The relationship between the two was really sweet and the spice felt well woven into the plot. I would definitely keep reading this series.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a holiday romance, but it doesn't feel like one. The main character struggles with a lot of relatable issues like sibling rivalry, family obligations, lack of fulfilment at work, etc. The cultural aspects were really interesting to read both as a first-gen indian-american but also dealing with her cultural identity back in India and the caste system. The romance was well-done for an instalove-ish story but still managed to have good depth to the relationship.

If you are looking for some quick cosmic horror with nostalgia of bustling shopping malls, look no further. It took me a little bit to get my bearings with this one. The art style is good, but I felt like I was trying to catch up with the story a bit.

I think it's definitely worth reading if cosmic horror is your thing.

A Cold Place for Dying

Kristopher Triana

DID NOT FINISH

Really blatant fatphobia immediately upon starting the book that continued. Added nothing to the story.

I wanted to love this book but it completely missed the mark in terms of consent.

The idea that you connect with someone who you believe to be his famous twin brother? Perfectly fine meet cute. The idea that you take this person home and pretend to be that person throughout a sexual encounter and get another person to go along with your lie? Not a good move.

For a book that specifically has ongoing conversations about consent around specific acts, the author missed the factor that the entire encounter is based around lack of consent and that the FMC believes she is consenting to sex with a specific person and that is not happening. As she continues to call this person by name throughout the encounter and he continues to actively mislead her, it completely took away the spice factor for me. And once it is revealed, supporting characters try to convince her that it was not a violation of consent? WHAT?

This is a complete miss for me.

dark medium-paced

This is a book with a really interesting premise and a good plot that feels poorly balanced. The introduction of the “big bad” comes in very suddenly and took away from that reveal. In the first half, the author was doing a lot of tell, not show but I thought the imagery in the last third of the book was excellent.

I loved watching the switch in the mother’s characterization through the plot and the supporting cast was great. I think this book tries to lean into southern gothic too hard for the quirky writing style. It is a really unique story which I did enjoy.

Overall I liked it, but it left me lack in some areas.
