Thank you Penguin Random House for an audio copy. Karla has such a distinct way of writing books. I read her nonfiction novel and then this is her debut lit fiction novel and there is something magical about the way Karla can pull off her books.
I’m going to be honest if you want a book with a very definitive plot and story this one may bug you. This book follows Catalina in a year of her life in college and she is undocumented. We get information about her family and life and what has happened over time. However the book doesn’t focus on Catalina’s undocumented status it really focuses on her humanity which reminds me so much of her nonfiction novel. There she centered talking to undocumented people but she specifically wanted to show their humanity- their flaws, their love, joy, struggles, and the same is with this one Catalina is frustrating at times and you do not always love her but being in her head is so fascinating.
