Caved in and read the OG romantasy, and shockingly it is way better than most of the knock-offs that followed. This book and story is predictable, but at least the MC is likeable, sensible, and actually has friendships with other women.

Not as good as book 1 :( this book felt like it was mainly Bree being on the back foot, pushed around by various forces. Most of it dragged, with occasional bits with plot. The raw part that drew me in book 1 - grief, love, and community - are a backseat to the YA romantasy plot needs and made this book feel more 'cookie-cutter' than book 1.

Still, I enjoyed reading this. I liked learning about Volition and the demons. Also I am Team Selwyn now. Please let them be endgame.

The first 70% of this book is like a cozy small-town novel, the last 30% had actual plot. I liked many elements and almost wish it had just been about MC healing and finding community in the small town.

Prose is disjointed and I skipped chapters quite liberally but I liked the unreliable narrator MC and the enemies to lovers dynamic. The MC is funny.

this book got me out of a reading slump and i am distressed to find out that there's a fourth book that has no release date and as of book 3 no conclusion on the love triangle 😭 what elevates this book beyond a thrilling YA adventure fantasy, is Bree's grief and her love for her mother, and her search for community and belonging. i found the parts about making sense of love and life and death so so moving, and finding out her truth about herself, her lineage/culture, to be so powerful.
