4 stars for the deep sea stuff, 3 stars for the explorations of personal identity. I appreciate how important these topics are and I like how Imbler used deep sea creatures to explore it, but the essay chapters didn't live up to it imo.

Dnf because it was pretty boring.

The City of Brass

S.A. Chakraborty

DID NOT FINISH

I was really enjoying this in the beginning, but the characters GRATED on me. Ali and Nahri are so unlikeable and self-centered

A refreshing romantasy with a heroine who reminded me a bit of Attolia from Queen's Thief (though Irene is way more ruthless) and a very sweet and tender relationship. I love a competent heroine!

Like the top review writes, this book is so sneaky in highlighting indigenous voices' in the scientific debate, I love it. This is a book about tech solutions to big conservation problems in the realm of sound, centering indigenous voices at every opportunity. It's a fascinating exploration of the role that sound plays in nature. Each chapter looks at a specific creature & how they use sound in their lives - whales, bats, bees etc.

The last chapter depressingly summarizes the insurmountable odds against the environment and nonhuman beings - I can only hope whales are still around in 50 years' time.

A brutally honest account of the things that those on the front line deal with because their work involves seeing horrific and traumatic shit on an hourly basis (I was reminded a bit of some of the cases in When Breath Becomes Air). Some of the accounts of her cases were absolutely gruesome and I had to take breaks reading. The prose is not for me and I ended up skimming and DNF'ing halfway but I appreciated the author's honesty and willingness to be laid bare.

The ending

I am PRAYING book 3 gets better.
