patchworkbunny's Reviews (2.12k)
Beautifully written. I felt that the passages describing war were very much in the spirit of the war poets. It is quite an intimate story, no big conspiracies or action, just the story of 3 people very much effected by the war.
A previous reviewer said that it felt a bit muddled. I can imagine that was exactly how wveryone was feeling in the days after the armistice.

Another fun adventure with some more unusual mythological creatures. I thought he'd made Bessie up, but no, the creature appears in one of Ovid's poems.
I was expecting this to be a bit of a fluffy vampire romance but it actually turned out to be a gripping read with proper not very nice vampires. Not too much mystical stuff and not too much sex but a good urban fantasy read.
I liked Carrie's first person narrative in the first book but in the second instalment the writing is split between first and second person to allow scenes where Carrie's not there. I don't think the style between the two was different enough to work perfectly but fortunately the story was gripping enough for me not to notice.
Not predictable and it had me reaching for the next book by the end.

I think this falls into the trap of so many urban fantasy series and starts to have a bit too much going on. Carrie spends most the book to-ing and fro-ing between her feelings about the men and Nathan seems to be permanently pissed off. Saying that, the ending surprised me and I have ordered book four to see what happens.
I always think there's a great fondness when Pratchett writes about the Chalk though maybe that's because it is obviously modelled on his current home of Wiltshire (if you were in doubt, the appearance of a giant with no trousers clinches it). I think Tiffany Aching has grown up quite considerably from when she first appeared and I wouldn't have automatically said this was a young adult book. Lots of charming, funny and tender moments makes this a fantastic read whatever age you are.
I wasn't loving this to start with, I felt it was a bit slow but really picked up in the second half. Very gory though so not good if you're screamish. Great ending.
I liked that this trilogy is set in the same world as thr Women of the Otherworld series. I felt having read the other books, I could better tell what was going on. If you're new to the world things might seem a bit ubelievable but I really enjoyed it. Great young adult read duitable for adults.
