This is one of my most anticipated books of this year. This had all of the makings of a book that I would enjoy - magic, mystery and murder. Specifically the twistedness of a serial killer. And I went it in expecting to be blown away. And I was. But - for whatever reason it took my forever to get through this book, and I have no idea why. The best that I can say is that it is a slow burn. I will say that the extra pronouns seemed a bit much, but they are not constantly used ( and I am not talking about the she/he/them pronouns). This is told in three different timelines and from three different perspectives. You know that they are all connected, just not sure how or when they will converge. And while the fun part of mysteries is trying to figure out who is behind everything, I have to admit that I didn't really try. Honestly, I don't that who was even important for most of the story. I liked Krona, and reading from her perspective. While she seemed to be the weaker member of the team, I think it was really that her skill sets were not easily identifiable. Especially since it's from her perspective. Because there are multiple wheels going and in different times, some things do get dropped in the storytelling-nothing big. By the time you figure out the truth of Charbon, his storyline has merged to the main one and so you don't get the details that may have otherwise be fleshed out. Similarly with Melanie's storyline. It converges to the main thread without crucial details. But had Lostetter given the crucial details in either Charbon's or Melanie's storyline, it would have made it overly obvious about who was behind the whole thing. This is a great start to a new series, it completes a story arc but leaves so many things open and ready to be explored in the following books. Just the way that I like it. It will be interesting to see Krona in a different position and continuing on with the new knowledge that she has. I am definitely looking forward to the next one.
