Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson

“Louise, stars in your eyes, my own constellation. I was following you faithfully but I looked down. You took me out beyond the house, over the roofs, way past commonsense and good behaviour. No compromise. I should have trusted you but I lost my nerve.” 187
Once finding out this is a queer novel I was so hooked! But even looking past that, it’s is a lovely and cozy novel on romance and ethics - how are we to deal with death when love is present? How selfish can we be in the name of if all? Winterson’s writing is also quite intertwining, with some sections being more abstract/artistic and others flowing narrative. These chances helped keep the emotions of the main character enticing, but personally was just a bit too much to follow at certain times

You know what? All of us ARE a little wrong in the head; and the realization of it is the most beautiful and tragic fall

My thoughts on this book that I shared the most with people were that: I really liked what I liked and didn’t enjoy much of what I didn’t. There were some aspects of it that really touched me and explorations of thought that were very beautifully written. As for the war sections, the political… it’s not that I didn’t appreciate it but it simply didn’t fit what I had already made of this book- maybe in a future analysis of it I will find it interesting!

Many people around me have read this book, and I’m glad I read it myself to get my own opinion on it. I feel like it did not teach me anything I hadn’t learnt these last years already, but reading it made my heart warm with the knowledge that this exists and will reach those who need to hear it.
I enjoyed reading passages of the book that so closely relate to the yogic teachings I’ve been studying. It’s beautiful how the same truths can be said in so many ways! It shows how strong these teachings are.
In all certainty I know I will be coming back to my copy of this book to recite some of the quotes from different characters… to reassure myself on my path… and just to know how beautiful the journey is!
