Holy crap. Ten stars. When this came out and everybody started raving about it, I checked it out and decided I wasn't interested. Rome, meh. First in a series, meh. Over 600 pages, meh. School setting, MEH.
But then I saw it in my library and brought it home - can't go wrong with a free book, right? And oh.my.god. The worldbuilding? Top tier. Detailed. Plausible. Terrifying. The characters? Real. Rounded. Complex. The story? Edge of your seat for every single one of the 620 pages. The prose? Dripping off his pen like honey. And never was there a scene that felt like filler, like it was there to just be another stumbling block for the hero.
This is what fantasy should read like. I devoured it, and then I bought my own copy. In hardcover. Mr Islington, you need to write that second book a bit faster, please.
