I've been feeling really done this year in terms of reading and reading this book felt so refreshing. I was completely invested in Rosie Dunne's story. Just when I thought Cecelia Ahern was going to serve me the regular "boy meet girl, boy and girl become best friends, and then fall in love and live happily ever after" story, she switched it up BIG time.

The characters in this book were memorable in their prose and even though they were the normal archetypes for male/female relationships, the two main characters of Rosie and Alec felt so real to me. It was almost like they were people I knew and even came to care about by the end of the story. Yet, even with this being said, I have to say Ahern did include one too many obstacles in the couple's way, which ended up causing the story to drag on for an unnecessary 500+ pages, but the laughs from Rosie and Co. lessened the blow a bit on this front.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a read that challenges the male/female best friend dynamic. While some people are adamant that the two sexes should be able to be just friends and love never get in the way, this book agrees to disagree with that notion in the most hilarious of ways. Plus, it gives just enough gushy feels and OMG moments that those in favor and against this notion will be appeased. Highly recommend!

Also, it's been made into a movie, but more on that later.

I feel like this play is similar to [b:For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide|58098|for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf|Ntozake Shange|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386924750s/58098.jpg|505856] in the fact that it has to be observed on the stage for it to really be fully understood. After researching I definitely understand LeRoi Jones' intention in terms of him trying to show the audience how even a well dressed and educated black man can fall prey to being stereotypically cast by whites, but for me the overall play felt like its dialogue was cut from a larger whole and the playwright had just piecied together things from his cutting room floor. I'm excited for his next play I own, which is, The Slave though.

I gave this play 2.5 stars.
