I found this play to be utterly disconcerting. The dynamics between Stanley, Stella, and Blanche was weird from the start. Stanley's character was nothing, but brute force all through the play while Blanche was this ethereal character that had no real weight in her presence or dialogue. Yet she kept me engaged enough in her storyline that I felt obligated to finish the play. Stella's character made me want to shake her and tell her to open up her eyes to her husband's Stanley's shortcomings.
I feel as if this is another classic that has been pegged as "monumental" when in reality all it is is lackluster and provocative for provocative sake. There is no real finality to the play for Stella and Stanley, Blanche is wronged by both of them, and the birth of the couple's child is just ornamental and serves no real purpose. I wouldn't recommend this play even though it is only a little over a hundred pages and a quick read. This time the brevity of the play totally works against it.

Once again, I ended up reading a book where the characters mope around and never really DO anything besides feel sorry for themselves. Out of the all the characters, I felt that Mitchell had the greatest potential to become an interesting character. His constant struggle to gain perspective of what he "believed" religiously was interesting. His only flaw seemed to be that he was head over heels for Madeline, a girl who was so self-involved and whiny that her very prescence made me want to throw Eugenides' novel clear across my room. I personally believed that Madeline deserved everything she got by the end of the novel. Her sham of a marriage to her maniac-depressive husband, Leonard who was an a**hole, made it super obvious to me that the only reason why I truly kept reading this book was to watch the train wreck unfold.
I honestly have no real feelings for this book and therefore, cannot in good faith recommend it to anybody. Hopefully, [b:Middlesex|2187|Middlesex|Jeffrey Eugenides|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1404667281s/2187.jpg|1352495] is better.
