I really, really hope Percival Everett got paid 3 million dollars for the rights to 'American Fiction'. The movie has all the edges rounded down from the story that it seems to be, has to be (?) a meta thing - give the world the silly romcom with a sprinkling of critique that (mostly white) people can enjoy watching and reward with an oscar for best adapted screenplay...
The book is so much more interesting and sharp and sad and funny and lonely!

Just my kind of book! Layers upon layers in its construction, language and (literary and historical) references, a fine wit, with a smart woman at its center and a strong political message - laugh out loud funny and just all around amazing!
P.S.: Sadly, the movie is not just a character assassination of Bella, God and basically everyone else in the book, but also murders every nuance, perpective, message, twist and layer.
