thank you to the netgalley for the earc.

what the fuck.

review (sorta):

4/5 stars. I absolutely loved 80% of this book. I’ve never read anything like it and probably never will again, I applaud it for somehow being so unique and fantastic. Although I loved this book, I am VERY conflicted about the ending. If you’ve read this, you probably know exactly what I mean. Even though I have no idea what to feel about the ending, I won’t let it ruin the fact that this was still a fantastic novel.

5/5 stars. This is the longest it’s taken me to read a book in about four years, but it has nothing to do with the book itself. It only took me so long since i’ve been in such a big reading slump all month.

I absolutely adored this book. The characters, the magic system, world building, as well as the plot was phenomenal.

I started this book with high expectations, but at the same time, reasonable ones, and I am so glad I did.

The concept of this book is (in summary) about how you can be “heartless”, but somehow still end up finding love if you find the right person. It sounds like a simple concept, but it’s not. The execution of this story was everything it needed to be a more.

I absolutely loved the explorations of family, betrayal, grief, guilt, as well as forgiveness. Tamsin made a tragic mistake that is later revealed in the book, and seeing how she ended up coming with it was very interesting.

I also loved Wren. She felt obligated and committed to doing what was “right” by her father, but the plague ended up being Wren’s reason for figuring out who she was, and allowing her to discover who she wants to be, with Tamsin by her side, in one way or another.

Tamsin and Wren’s dynamic was so interesting. Although Tamsin couldn’t feel love, she felt anger, grief, frustration, and so many other emotions and watching her slowing start feeling other emotions like pleasure, hope, and eventually love, was captivating, especially since Wren was the person that was able to bring out these emotions from her.

There is so much more I can say, but there isn’t enough room so i’ll just end with this. I absolutely loved this book and am so happy to have finally read it, and will cherish it for a long time.
