Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

Dexter is a sociopath, serial killer, and a man who adheres to a strict moral code instilled in him by his foster father. He only kills killers. Is it sick and wrong that I'm a bit attracted?

I was intrigued by the character concept, but the book is very short and sparse. True, it's a series, and I have picked up book two already. Still, I just plain prefer more. He's a fiercely introverted and introspective man, so with a first-person narrative, I should have gotten to know him quickly. I didn't. Perhaps book two will be more revealing.

Perhaps you're not supposed to be able to get to know a sociopath?

This was way fun, and totally my style. It was silly but dark, and dorky but touching at times. The cover kind of gives the "surprise" ending away: that the kid is Death, not the dad. But of course, I think it was only a surprise for the dad (uhm, hello? Your baby can kill things with a single word, duh...). Still, it was totally fun.

I listened to the audio for this, and the narrator was a great narrator and a good voice for men. He stunk as a woman, though. It was distractingly bad and took me way out of the book everytime he spoke in a woman or child's voice, so while I enjoyed the book I do not recommend the audio.

Re-reading this book is like going home. It is the only book I've read more than twice, and I've probably read it totalling near a half-dozen times.
