A Letter To Holden

Dear Holden,
I've compiled a list of songs that you might enjoy, with explanation, relating to your emotions and characteristics.

1. Youth [Daughter]

This song is about growing up and the pain this brings along, a song of pain directed to the adults who don’t take teenagers seriously and think they have no problems whatsoever. It talks about young people who have no clue where to go and how to live life. "We are the reckless we are the wild youth", is an ironic line in the song because throughout the song, the artist makes points that she is not so reckless or carefree, like normal teenagers should be. This is a perfect song for you to relate to because you feel lost and sad most of the time and you don’t really know where you’re going.

2. Hello [Adele]

This song is about a girl who calls someone she misses. She wants to catch up with him and see how he’s doing, and to apologize for everything that she's done in the past. Holden, every-time you seem to be lonely or depressed, you turn to calling someone you haven’t talked to in a while, for example, Jane Gallagher, Carl Luce or even Sally Hayes. Is it because you need someone to talk to? Someone to share your feelings and thoughts with? Listen to this song, maybe it can help you out.

3. Love it If We Made It [The 1975]

This song is about the messed up society we live in today and all the modern problems we deal with. From bullying, to drugs, to school shootings, the artist talks about how he feels that the world is a terrible place and there is only little hope for it to become good again. Holden, this song is perfect for you because you seem to feel the same way. You perceive everyone as phony and mean, and you think kids innocence are being taken away from writings on the wall.

4. Happy [Marina]

This song is from the mind of a girl that has been depressed for so very long, and she didn't think she would ever get better. She thought that she would be sad for the rest of her life until a moment came along where she realized she was finally happy. This song is good for you Holden, because you feel hopeless and lost, so this song will remind you that it will get better. You also felt happy when you were with Phoebe at the zoo so this can be a reminder of that moment.

5. Move Your Feet [Junior Senior]

This is an upbeat song about getting up and moving your feet. It makes it impossible for you to be upset. Every-time you hear it, you want to shout and dance. I chose this song for you, Holden, because I know you think you are a great dancer. Aswell, you always seem down and depressed and this song will turn your mood straight around. Maybe listen to it with Phoebe, so you can dance and have fun together.

6. A Change Is Gonna Come [Greta Van Fleet]

This is a song about change (obviously). The artists talks about how it’s been a long time since anything has changed but he feels one coming. “It's been too hard living, But I'm afraid to die,
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky.” This clearly means he’s suffering from living but is afraid to die, from either suicide or an accident. Holden, I know something you are afraid of is change but there is always change in life and you need to deal with it.

7. I’m Just A Kid [Simple Plan]

This song is about a teen talking about how he thinks life is a nightmare. He’s saying how everyone around him is having more fun than he is, and he feels alone. This song is perfect for you, Holden. It could even seem like something you would write. You feel like you don’t fit in with anyone and everything and everyone around you is changing. You think everyone is phony and you seem to think that “life is a nightmare”.

8. Everytime [Ariana Grande]

This song is about a girl who is always relating back to that specific someone. Even though this song is supposed to be about a past relationship, I put it in because you always seem to relate back to Allie. I know you loved Allie very much and that’s why he is constantly in your mind. If you would have a bad thought, you would think of him. Ike the song says “back to you”, you always will refer back to Allie.

9. Heaven [Bryan Adams]

This is a beautiful love song. The lyrics talk about someone who is so deeply in love that it feels like heaven.
“Oh, once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feelin' down
Yeah, nothin' could change what you mean to me”
This could be meant for someone who you are in love with, but to me, it also shows your relationship with Allie. When Allie passed away, you were devastated, but you will never forget about him. He was one of the things that made you happy. It also is called “Heaven” which is suitable for Allie.

10. Sweet Creature [Harry Styles]

This is an upbeat, but chill song written for someone who always makes it feel like home, for example, a family member. There were arguments and they were both stubborn but at the end of the day, they always got through it.
“Sweet creature, sweet creature
Wherever I go, you bring me home”
This was my favourite song to give to you because it perfectly describes you and Phoebe’s relationship. I think she is your favourite person in the world and you care for her very much. No matter what, even if you are both stubborn, you will always go back to eachother.

this was soooo fucking weird and strange lmao but tell me why I loved it. at first I was laughing and enjoying myself and then it got kinda dark and made me so uncomfortable. the story clearly has a lot of symbolism in it, and just when I thought I knew what it meant, there was something completely different going on. I would love to fully analyze this and honestly cant wait for the class we talk about this, is that fucked up of me lol

anyways, "a come-covered barbie" is a sentence I never thought I would read for school
