While a classic, I did not find this book to be particularly compelling. I think it lacks a focused plot, or any appreciable character development. I'm open to be swayed on these points by a focused argument, but I turned the pages out of commitment rather than genuine enjoyment.

This is a piece of culture, and I value that. But I don't believe reading the text gave me any more information than summaries on YouTube have (and their level of Comedy outstrips the Divine).

I am conditioned to anticipate miscommunications when reading romances, I expect them around every bend. They are a grab-bag kind of conflict. McQuiston gave her characters more maturity, the perspective not to jump to conclusions, to wait and ask and talk to each other. Alex and Henry do not have an easy relationship, but the complications they face are not from each other, and it's wildly refreshing.
The escapism here comes from the alternative political atmosphere, but also from the devotion of these two characters and the all-encompassing and healthy way they love each other.

Reading this book was such a cool experience, and honestly felt a little like being let in on a secret. Being from the US rather than the Canadian intended audience, I was recommended this book while on vacation and borrowed the eBook from my local library. Hanako Muraoka's story is compelling from start to finish, and along the way includes details of Japanese history from her lifetime that are accessible without background but are also gems to me having studied this period some myself. I feel honored to have been given a window into the life of this extraordinary woman
