A dark and see gritty intergenerational saga that manages to be simultaneously heartbreaking and hopeful. Told in shifting perspectives of an interconnected women who aren't always aware of the fragile web that binds them. 

The lives of the women and girls in The Break are are not easy, yet they are resilient in a way that makes them survivors. Vermette does the unimaginable - making the reader empathize with even the "villains" of the story and helping the reader to understand that relationships and connections are complex. 

This book has won numerous awards, and deserved each and every one.
