A fascinating collection of short stories, all of them fun and inventive takes on different concepts within 20th century science. I found the quality of the stories quite variable; I'm very biased, I learned, towards Calvino's middle career. This book,  a collection of stories from across his time as a writer, really does a fantastic job charting his stylistic development. I can understand a little better now how Calvino became Calvino.
