This was a tremendous book. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I have.

It tells the story of a few main characters but the story itself is literally about the brazilian people which is self explanatory but not really, you only get the actual sense of how this describes the ways of the people after reading the whole thing.
The author really gets into the character's mind in a flow of consciousness that I had never experienced before, which is very different from the Mrs. Dalloway of Virginia Woolf that I have read last year, it's just as subtle but a little bit more easy to grasp I would depending on the part of the book you are at. These moment where we are completely inside the characters mind just seeing and understanding the world through their thoughts make it much more interesting to read this story, I was impressed by João writing style, as I was not expecting anything as complex as I had gotten. Not only because the story develops through out over 300 years with the origin stories of one side of the main family displayed in the story, but because of how genially done it is.

The underlying message of the book is pretty much a mock to the rich and an ode to the actual hard working people of the low classes and diverse backgrounds. One of the closing chapters almost made me cry.

This is a book that has made me laugh and cry. This book will stay with me forever.
