The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

3.0

I'm surprised by how entertaining this was as an audiobook. I found myself pretty caught up in the drama of English majors and their love lives. The number of impressive names and theories dropped into this novel come to resemble a syllabus by the end. For my part, I would have liked more humor and more commentary on Madeline's thesis on "the marriage plot" beyond the weak marriage plot presented in the novel's narrative. It's basically a retelling of Far From the Madding Crowd without the winning spunk of Bathsheba Everdeen.
