Monday the Rabbi Took Off by Harry Kemelman

5.0

The Rabbi takes a trip in this one, but it's not just a 3 month stint in the Holy Land. It's an introspection about identity and mid-career funk, all taking place in the early to mid 1970s. I loved the atmosphere- given I haven't been anywhere outside of work and my house in almost a year, listening to the narrator describe people watching in a hole in the wall café, or just a Sunday trip in the park, well- it was moving. Again, if you are reading these books for the mystery- you are probably going to be disappointed. (This one tried to take an international/spy intrigue twist *shrug.*) But, I found myself considering what Rabbi Small contemplated- what does it mean to take a Sabbath when everything is shut down? Is it worth doing a job you are constantly fighting to keep?
