The Greater Trumps by Charles Williams

3.0

Williams got a bit too esoteric for me in this one. Don't get me wrong: it's still an enjoyable, thrilling time. There are just decent chunks of pages that seem to be little more than an excuse for him to lay out just how much he got out of being in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The central conceit—the personified Major Arcana of the Tarot breaking into and disrupting the ordinary world—also felt like a remix of what he did with The Place of the Lion and Platonic forms. If you like his other stuff, I would still recommend this. It has its charms for sure. It's just not quite up to snuff with when he really gets the balance between his out-there interests and approachable prose just right.
