A Small Town Boy by N.S. Mohan Ram

5.0

A Small Town boy is a memoir of a boy born in a small town in a conventional family with a very restricted outlook on life (though there are figures of unconventionality in his life). The author speaks a lot of his childhood escapades, a narrow death experience that doesn’t seem to faze him at all and the perspectives that he gains from his restricted outlook of living in a small town until he is exposed to the real world. He also talks a lot of how his life is shaped by the people around him and provides anecdotes of his experiences with those who make an impression on his life. His Alma mater makes too frequent an appearance, but understandable as he does pen the significant impact it has had on his life.

The writing is very easy to follow. Although, I do think one does need some level of familiarity with the Indian culture and in particular some level of understanding of Tamil customs. It isn’t mandatory but adds to the relatability for anyone reading it.

Overall, a neatly crafted memoir. Enjoyed reading it.
