I think this is one of Carr's lesser works. There aren't really clues and what is there is pretty obscure. like
how chloroform arise from the chemical reactions in the champagne bottle
. There's no action once the initial murder occurs, and the solution is a but implausible. For example, how is
de Lautrec
  supposed to come up with
false jewels to replace all of Rose's collection, that are good enough to fool the layman (but not an expert, obvs), in the one hour he has while he's away from the gaming table
?

I don't recommend, unless you insist on reading all the Carr/Bencolin books.
