Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media by Edward S. Herman, Noam Chomsky

challenging informative reflective sad slow-paced

4.5

Herman & Chomsky dissect with precision how the modern mainstream media works, the filters they have in place to make sure the narrative fits their owners’ views, and give extensive examples of this propaganda model at work in the US media with separate news stories. They point out glaring contradictions in how the media handles and report on the actions of certain countries compared to how similar actions from the US are handled. Exceptional work from the late 80s that is still very much relevant today (2024, TikTok ban, coverage on Palestine & protests on college campuses, etc.)
