The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

4.0

I held off on this volume because I thought these were Sherlock flashbacks, which I guess doesn't matter in their serial nature. But the first tale put my mind at ease. Per usual, I had fun learning so much about deductive reasoning, of which I'll never be in a position to use.

For my own sake, I have written a summary of each case:

The Empty House
Watson appears at the scene of a murder. Sherlock is dead, though. But wait - Sherlock is not dead! There is a loose end, three years running. Let's hide. Wait, what about that other loose end from the beginning?

The Norwood Builder
Sherlock and Lestrade have a good, fun duck-measuring contest.

The Dancing Men
Sherlock acts like Ron Swanson solving a cryptex all while a man's marriage falls into ruins.

The Solitary Cyclist
A LADY (Jerry Lewis voice) is drawing the affections of everyone for the only obvious reason. South African riches are becoming a trend in this collection…

The Priory School
Prep school kid just wants to do kid things.

Black Peter
All I remember is a savage harpoon death.

Charles Augustus Milverton
Sherlock battles wits with "the worst man in London" - a guy who uses money and information to manipulate things his way. Little close to home, this story.

The Six Napoleons
Some Napoleon statues keep getting broken with little rhyme or reason.

The Three Students
Sherlock vs. nepotism.

The Golden Pince-Nez
The one with the cigarettes. This story has a great example of hinting at the reveal when readers aren't keen enough to realize it at the time.

The Missing Three-Quarter
Sherlock faces one of his main weaknesses: SPORTS.

The Abbey Grange
A LADY was tied up by burglars and watched her husband get unalived. Her story has some holes!

The Second Stain
A Lord and his LADY misplaced some documents that have international implications.
