I would almost give it a 5 if it weren't for the authors voice. The plot, characters, and action are top-notch. However, the dry, almost non-fiction style writing Novik uses makes it challenging to get through. I'm glad I read this on my Kindle because I looked up the definition for at least 10 words a chapter. Speaking of chapters, boy, are they long, which did not encourage me to keep going between lulls in big scenes. There were big gaps in places where more emotional and descriptive language could have completely changed it. The last scene with Levitas made me sad but written with more beautiful prose, and I would have been utterly destroyed. I am obsessed with Temeraire and Lawrence's relationship, and I'm excited to see their future adventures. I just wish the writing was more emotional and descriptive
