Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia

4.0

Usually I spent most of my time somewhere in my fantasy niche. I like being surrounded by touches of magic, some witches, some monsters or immortal lovers. But, I was really curious what Garcia would do with a contemporary story and the blurb of this one just kinda spoke to me. So, yesterday evening I picked this book up and started reading.

I had actually planned to stop at 50 pages read, but I ended up reading more than 100. I just couldn't put the book away. The story was gripping, the issues and dilemma's were really realistic and well written and the pace of the story seemed fast. In the middle of the book that pace does slow down a little, but I was really curious where this story would go and the ending of the book didn't disappoint.

Peyton's learning curve and growing curve is actually quite nice to watch. Mostly because her reactions to people around her and to events happening to her seem so realistic and true. Although she's completely different from me, it was easy to understand her, to understand her emotions, where she was coming from, why she was reacting the way she was and why she was making mistakes. Apart from that, it was truly nice to actually witness her learning from those mistakes.

Although I do think that the pace of the book could have been better, with some more development in the middle part of the book, I overall think that this is a really nice and good book, especially considering the fact that contemporary is truly not my genre and not something I usually enjoy much.

The synopsis for the lovely reckless doesn't truly speak to me, not like this one did, but who knows. Maybe I will give it a try in the future. I'm hopeful that that one might be able to surprise me too!
