The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman

4.0

"Courage isn’t just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It’s being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway." - Dr. Who (3rd).

Maus is a graphic novel - scratch that - graphic memoir that everyone should read. It is a book that stays with you, makes you think a lot about the value of life and family amongst other things.
It relates the story of the author's father (Vladek Spiegelman), polish jew, during the horrific events of the Second World War. It also explores the troubled relationship between Art and Vladek, which was for me the most poignant (yet often funny) part of the book. The characters' anthropomorphism is brilliantly and very astutely done; it gives the story an interesting twist and it showcases the author's amazing ingenuity and creativeness.
I wish there were more books that approach such difficult subjects so cleverly.
