Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers

4.0

I'm embarrassed to say that this is my first Sayers novel. I quickly got the rest of her books after reading this one. What I really liked about Sayers is the slightly sarcastic, Wildean tone she's got - the lady's having fun and it shows. She's quite funny. She's got a way of putting philosophical questions to you without moralizing, and that's a rare talent. She presents a situation to you, showing you the consequences of actions, and you get to make up your own mind whether it's right or not. And you know what? You wouldn't be wrong whatever you chose. That's a lovely thing, and Sayers got it down beautifully.

While the mystery wasn't completely unpredictable (you get broad hints as to who it is, but it's a gut feeling kind of hint), it's still a good read. Turn off your brains a bit, and let Wimsey and Vane do the thinking. I have to admit that the "lovey" bits irritated me to no end, but that's me. I'm too stupid to understand these lovers' games. If you have patience for romantic bits then you'll like it better.
