Following a heavy rain, a mysterious black grass begins to invade every piece of land it encounters. In addition to being virtually indestructible, the black grass grows quickly, releases a sleeping gas, and forms underground "pit plants" filled with acid. Three teenagers appear to be immune to all the side effects of the black grass.

The premise of this story is excellent, but I found the pace of the story a little slow. I liked the division within the chapters between the different points of view of the teenagers. In general, this first book gave me the impression of being a big premise for the actual beginning of the story.
