I really liked the specifics of life that this book dug into. The sense of time and place is very present but it's always through the lives and feelings and relationships of these young women, rather than as background narration. It makes it feel like a story about people and not a history lesson. That said, it's a story very much in conversation with the United States as it is today and it specifically addresses a lot that's been brought more into the mainstream over the last few years with regards to America's history of racism and treatment of Black people.

I've never read Little Women, so I really can't speak to its connections to that book except I recognize the girls' nicknames as the Little Women characters.
