Angus and Sadie by Cynthia Voigt

3.0

Mister and Missus live on a farm in Maine and decide they want a dog. However, they go to the library to research breeds (yay) and decide on a border collie mix and eventually head off to the shelter to adopt one, but they can't decide between two very cute puppies and end up with both Angus and Sadie who have different personalities.

Voigt nails the new dog experience and gets into the dog personalities brilliantly. (This would be a good time to mention that this is one of those books where we can hear what animals are saying to each other, but the humans in the story can't.) Angus is bold and adventuresome. Sadie is a bit shy but very companionable. This works pretty well for a while, but about 3/4 of the way through the story the differences between the dogs begin to seem more like a mentally abusive relationship. (This is why it got only 3 stars.)

All turns out well, though, for the young dogs, as the book doesn't really end and instead sets up the next book in the series.
